Getting the tickets was a hassle (but I do know people who simply showed up and were admitted freely) but it kep the crwods away and was definitely worth the trouble. The location is remote but the space itself impressive: not so long ago it used to be the Pavilion of Future during Shanghai Expo 2010, and was also once the site of the Nanshi Power Plant. Today, the building houses the Shanghai Power Station of Art, featuring an exhibition area of 1500 square meters.
Until the end of March, the Shanghai Power Station of Art will be home to the 9th edition of Shanghai's Biennale, which features artwork on the theme of 'reactivation'.
It is truly refreshing to visit such a place in Shanghai: the quality of the artwork, but also the size (the huge space giving artists the opportunity to display oversize pieces that we are not used to see in local museum and galleries). The exhibition is huge and spreads over 5 floors. We spent an 1.5h there and had just enough time to see half of it. Also, try to avoid going there at the end of the day, it would be a shame to see the exhibition without daylight, and you'll have trouble finding a taxi to get back home.
